More broadband providers for Australians to choose from
A record number of telecommunications companies are now connected to Australia’s NBN, according to a new report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), making it even more important to compare your options before renewing your home’s broadband internet contract.
According to the ACCC’s latest NBN Wholesale Market Indicators Report, smaller retail service providers increased their market share in the wholesale market by a fractional margin (0.8 per cent) to 12.6 per cent in the June 2022 quarter. This represents a 4.4 per cent increase year-on-year.
While smaller providers such as Aussie Broadband increased their market share over the June 2022 quarter, larger and more-established providers such as Telstra, TPG, Optus and Vocus all declined slightly in terms of market share over the same period.
The report also found that in the June quarter there were at least 17 providers directly acquiring NBN services at all 121 of the Points of Interconnection (POIs), compared to 13 providers in the March quarter. This means that no matter where you live in Australia, you should have more potential broadband providers to choose from.
Additionally, the report found that just over 8.7 million residential broadband services are now on the NBN, and three-quarters of those are high speed plans of at least 50 Mbps or more.
ACCC commissioner, Anna Brakey, said that many Australians will see the benefit of the growth of smaller providers increasing competitive tension in broadband markets.
“Consumers have a wide range of choice for their broadband retailer, which enables them to choose the product that best suits them. … The popularity of the higher speed tiers means that retail competition for these customers is strong, so we recommend that consumers regularly check for new offers or newly discounted deals.”
Before you choose an NBN provider it’s important to do your research and compare your options.
